Sustainability

Sustainability is at the core of our business, starting with sourcing and continuing until the final product stage.

At Crossville, “Green” is Both Color and Commitment.

Any product that comes from the earth should have minimal impact on it. This has been the vision we’ve had for our business since the beginning. Originating from our core values, our ongoing efforts in sustainability support the belief that the built environment should foster well-being in our lives at home, at work, and beyond.

We’ve been sustainability-focused since day 1. Our core value of improvement has led us to designing and remodeling our plants to reduce the impact that manufacturing has on our natural resources, while our product development teams strive to do the same. And our core value of partnership has us working diligently with our supply chain to help them make improvements beyond the walls of our factories and service locations.

Across all our sustainable tile products, our efforts support four flags of sustainability that serve as Crossville’s guiding compass.

Carbon Reduction

Waste Management

Partnership

Carbon Reduction

Reducing the world’s carbon footprint is easier when we walk on sustainable flooring. We are actively decarbonizing our products and facilities by:

  • Maximizing efficiencies to reduce natural gas consumption
  • Optimizing our formulations and formats to lower energy impacts
  • Partnering with landlords to implement LED action-controlled lighting
  • Actively leveraging full-truckload shipments to reduce fuel waste
  • Pursuing new equipment with lower energy requirements

We are working diligently with the Tennessee Valley Authority, (TVA) – whose goal is to be carbon neutral themselves by 2050 – and our local natural gas supplier to be more efficient in our consumption of natural gas and electricity, our largest carbon contributor. As we look to launch new products, we’ll continue to improve our own efficiencies and equipment, as well as explore the purchase of carbon offsets, with the goal of producing some of the most energy-responsible tile in the world.

Waste Management

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. We’ve all heard it before, but making less waste and finding innovative ways to use byproduct and second-grade materials are at the heart of Crossville’s sustainability efforts. A few examples include:

  • Filtering and recirculating waste water through our plants to reduce water consumptions
  • Recycling all cardboard in manufacturing facilities
  • Recycling unfired and fired scrap tile back into first-grade products
  • Taking back unused scrap tile from job sites through our Tile Take-Back™ Program for recycling
  • View our list of pre-consumer recycled content by series and/or color.

We’re so good at managing the waste we create that we’re actually a net consumer of waste, meaning we use more waste than we actively produce.

Partnership

Partnership is one of Crossville’s core values and is at the heart of all we do. When it comes to environmental impact, Crossville is part of a variety of sustainability programs that highlight our endeavors from rating systems to healthy performance. Sustainability Report

Crossville was the first tile manufacturer to have a 3rd party certified sustainability report. When we initially began the report, our goal was to provide the design community with reliable data they could trust. As new mechanisms and reporting in sustainability have arisen, we believe this report remains a concise presentation that accurately reports and verifies our sustainable actions.

As we continue to embark on our future Sustainability Reports, we look forward to sharing more on our progress in our environmental efforts, starting with the impact of our sustainable tiles on the porcelain tile industry.
