Renovating a residential kitchen can be a daunting task. From cabinets to flooring and walls to countertops, making these many decisions can paralyze homeowners and scare them away from the process. For some homeowners, the challenge and DIY process is exciting. And then, there are those homeowners who recognize their limitations and involve designers and contractors to ensure their vision becomes a reality.
Either way, if you are choosing a designer or going on your DIY adventure, before you start selecting materials, identifying the renovation goals for aesthetics and function makes the process go smoothly. If you have lived in the home for some time, you will know if the area functions as you need it or if major renovations are required.
A couple shared their recent DIY journey of a residential kitchen renovation using Crossville’s Handwritten collection in their new space.
Why did you decide to renovate your kitchen?
Since we moved into our home in 2015, we wanted to renovate our kitchen. It was time to upgrade from the standard builder-installed countertops and finishes.
What were your design goals for aesthetics and function?
Our kitchen is a decent size but we felt the space could be better utilized if we changed the layout. We wanted a brighter, more polished space to compliment the modern rustic vibe throughout the rest of our home. Removing the peninsula countertop and adding an island totally transformed the space.
Why did you select Crossville’s Handwritten wall tile for the wall and backsplash?
The homeowners wanted a bold cabinet color, so they chose a classic subway tile for the backsplash. With Handwritten in Unscripted 3” x 12”, the tile provided a timeless look that added the perfect amount of contrast to our new black countertops and green cabinets.
Additionally, the homeowners installed Handwritten in the Leaf Mosaic on their built-in wall adding visual interest to their more decorative space. “This is now our favorite wall in our home! The pattern is so unique and truly looks different every time we look at it. It gave us the wow factor we were hoping for!”
Tell me about those cabinets! The green is gorgeous. What is the color, and why did you select it?
I have always loved a green kitchen. I had to talk my husband into such a bold choice, but we are both so pleased with the outcome. The color is Sherwin Williams Rock Garden. I’m not a designer, but I literally looked at hundreds of kitchens for inspiration, and all of my favorites had a bold green either on the walls or cabinets.
What is your DIY-experience level?
My husband was an electrician for 13 years and is now a superintendent for a large commercial general contractor. My father-in-law is also a general contractor and had a custom carpentry business for 30 years. My husband spent many summers and weekends working for him renovating bathrooms, kitchens, and more. My husband and father-in-law work so well together, and their attention to detail is incredible.
Because of their renovation experience, it took about two months of weekend work to complete the kitchen. The couple also refinished and restained the floors, painted the entire downstairs, and added crown molding throughout the first level.
