Hospitality Designers Share Tips and Insights

June 19, 2020

Harkins Guertin

Interior Designers Janet Harkins and Liz Guertin of New Hampshire-based space planning and interior design firm Stibler Associates recently shared some insights and tips specially for hospitality spaces. The firm worked with Crossville on the DoubleTree by Hilton in Manchester, New Hampshire, which underwent a multi-million-dollar renovation.

What about Crossville’s porcelain tile panels do you appreciate when designing for hospitality?

The thinner large format products provide opportunities for creative applications in many areas, particularly vertical surfaces. Our design showcased this product by wrapping structural columns, highlighting integral portions of the bar, and creating built-in seating at the entry.

What advice do you have specifically for new hospitality designers?

Having an understanding of the brand standards and drawing inspiration from the local community helps to establish a clear direction. Managing team input and maintaining design objectives provides a successful formula for inspired design.

What initially drew you to interior design?

A passion for creating beautiful and functional spaces that inspire people as they live, work and play.

For this particular project, what was the challenge in bringing more of a boutique style to a national chain?

Inspiration for the renovation was pulled directly from the historic mill buildings and the Merrimack River. The industrial flavor of the space was captured in lighting details and the Crossville metal oxide tile. The overall design has created a space that resonates with the community.
