Crossville Collections Solve Commercial Design Challenges

Commercial property has a broad definition – typically a building used for business activities or to generate profit. With this expansive terminology, it is difficult to identify product specifications without further segmenting the types of commercial facilities into more niche industries such as hospitality, office, education, or mass transit. Luckily, Crossville has superb flooring choices for each of these commercial areas, and designers can choose stylish yet functional tile selections that will meet the high technical demands in each of these very different spaces.

Check out how Crossville collections were installed in these various commercial facilities, each solving a design challenge and providing the needed function and style components.

Office: Gourley Plaza
Gourley Plaza

When a major tenant decided to vacate a building leaving it practically empty, forward-thinking building owners Mercantile Partners took the opportunity to renovate Gourley Plaza in Fort Worth, Texas. In addition to the overall building updates, the design team needed to keep in mind the length of time the building would be unavailable for new tenants. Time was money with this renovation.

The flooring design featuring Crossville tile collections carries through the ambiance while also offering an artful approach to wayfinding for building visitors. The floors are conceptualized as an extension of the exterior building entrance plaza that continues through the interior lobby. This configuration helps to visually direct visitors to the elevators, while also defining zones for waiting or relaxing. The design team of VLK achieved this through creation of floor tile patterns using subtle color changes and sophisticated mixing of tile sizes. Crossville’s Moonstruck and Shades collections not only offered the right aesthetics, sizes, and color options; these collections provided the required technical specifications for busy, high-traffic areas. Likewise, the tiles offer long-term ease of maintenance and durability that are essential for commercial spaces.

Education: Northwestern University Walter Annenberg Hall

Northwestern University
Northwestern University Annenberg Hall’s entry and circulation space in the lobby were in need of an update to a more contemporary style. Wall tile for the corridors was among the many features to be updated for the project. In considering an alternative covering for the walls, the design team looked for options that would help avoid a costly, time-consuming demolition. Working with Crossville, the team identified Crossville’s gauged porcelain tile panels as an ideal solution for the project. These tile panels, with generously proportioned outer dimensions yet an extremely lean profile, can be installed with minimal grout line directly over previously installed tile, eliminating the need to demo the walls. The team ultimately specified Crossville’s Blend collection in the Avorio color to skin the walls in the main lobby. This hue captures a sophisticated look that is both modern and timelessly appealing.

To complement the look on the walls, the design team opted for Pietra di Savoia – Grigia tile panels from Crossville’s I Naturali collection for the floor of the monument stair and landings. In combination with the fresh simplicity of the Avorio wall color, the Pietra di Savoia creates a soothing appearance that works harmoniously with other materials throughout the space. Long-term, these durable tile panels on both floor and wall will be easily cleaned and maintained while retaining their elegant appearance.

Mass Transit: Pensacola International Airport

Pensacola Airport
The project specifications required that the flooring offer exceptional durability and ease of cleaning and maintenance. Additionally, the flooring needed to provide a smooth surface for all the roller boards, wheeled suitcases, equipment, and wheelchairs that are commonly used in the airport. The team was also concerned about acoustics in the large, open space of the 400’-long concourse area. And, of course, the look and style of the material had to align with the desired ‘coastal sands’ aesthetic the team sought to create for this Florida vacation hub.

With its sandstone-textured and striation-rich design, Crossville’s Moonstruck echoes the feel of the beach, and its warm-to-cool tones and flowing, directional veining give dimension and visual interest. The design team incorporated four Moonstruck colors—Juno, Kosmos, Gemini, and Apollo—and mixed the collection’s polished and matte options to create the look of flowing waves throughout the concourse.

Additionally, to greet travelers in truly unique Pensacola style, the design team included waterjet-cut designs of pelicans artfully inserted into the flooring throughout the concourse.

Hospitality: Gray Wolf Peak Casino

Gray Wolf
As the team had already faced numerous construction delays, it was essential that the flooring of the casino be installed without any problems. Crossville’s SpeakEasy collection for the main floor entrance, as it provided the desired look as well as superior, lasting technical performance. In such a high traffic area, SpeakEasy provides a warm, welcoming look and lasting durability, yet is easy to clean and maintain—even during the cold, wet winter months in Montana.

For the columns and walls in the bar areas, Dixon recommended the Oxide collection in the Perla and Nero colors from Crossville’s gauged porcelain tile panel line-up. With their lean profiles and installation versatility, these porcelain panels capitalize on the appeal of a nearly seamless look with fewer grout lines and could be installed efficiently to keep help keep the project timing on track.
