Located in the historic and fashionable Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami, Dinner Key Marina is Florida’s largest wet-slip marina facility with spaces for 582 boats. The marina now boasts a stunning new LEED Gold Certified dockmaster facility which houses offices, showers and lockers and we at Crossville are honored that this exceptional multi-functional facility features lots of tile throughout, and it’s all Crossville!
Originally an island, Dinner Key was connected to the mainland in 1914 by filling in the intervening space. It has been said that the name was derived from the fact that the island was a convenient place to stop to eat while traveling by boat between the mouth of the Miami River and Snapper Creek south of Miami. Dinner Key’s rich history includes being the location of International Pan American Airport and home to its famed flying boats (the Clippers), that symbolized Pan Am in the 1930s and 40s.
The dock master facility at Dinner Key Marina was designed by MC Harry & Associates, a Miami based architectural and engineering firm with a long history of providing award winning planning and design services to a variety of government agencies and public institutions. The tile was provided by D&B Tile Distributors, the exclusive distributor for Crossville Tile in South Florida.
Because everything in the marina office building would need to be designed for slip resistance, as well as long-term heavy public use, the design team chose Crossville’s CrossColors in two colors and in several special finishes, CrossTread, CrossSlate and CrossSheen. CrossTread has a cross hatch pattern across the top and is available in 8 x 8 tiles. CrossSlate, available in available in 6×6, 8×8, and 12×12, has the texture of stone. CrossSheen is an anti-graffiti finish and was used on the bathroom walls.
