Crossville Looks at Tile Trends for 2019

What will be the most significant tile trends in the coming year? Whether used as a foundational element or focal point, tile is one of the building blocks of design that is meant to last a long time. For this reason, great tile styles do not fade quickly (think subway tile and all its exciting incarnations over the years), but that doesn't mean that tile looks remain stagnant. Quite the contrary, every year brings exciting new tile looks that align with the current design trends in general. Additionally, we'll always see a few new twists on old favorites, and some of the trends that emerged in recent years will grow stronger. Here's a look at some of the tile trends we can expect to embrace in 2019.

Big Tiles

While not necessarily a new trend, “big” will continue being a big deal for tile. From porcelain tile panels measured in feet–not inches to large format field tiles, the commercial design market is becoming accustomed and increasingly educated on the benefits of “big” for installations. The appeal of “big” includes fewer grout lines and uninterrupted style, as well as tile-over-tile potential for efficient renovations (Crossville gauged porcelain tile panels make this possible!) and expanded application potential such as massive feature walls and exterior applications. As “big” transitions from trend to tradition in the commercial arena, it’s becoming increasingly more popular in the residential market as designers and homeowners recognize these same benefits for home settings. And thanks to the leaps and bounds that have been made in digital technology, there are so many fabulous, on-trend looks available–from authentic looking stone to aged and oxidized metals and even silk-inspired looks–that make the “big” trend even more alluring for everyone.

Here, our gauged porcelain tile panels in the sophisticated Noir Desir color grace the walls of an elevator bank in a commercial building. With detailed and life-like veining, this supersized stone looks as good as natural stone delivered straight from the quarry!

A homeowner chose porcelain tile panels in I Naturali Calacatta Oro in a polished finish for this modern townhouse in Philadelphia. With a look reminiscent of Calcutta marble, the material pairs beautifully with the kitchen’s contemporary and sleek design elements, lending a classic, sophisticated feel to the space.

Mosaics

In contrast to “big,” we also see an interest in “small,” in the form of varied mosaic options. Mosaics in the Crossville product offerings are as functional as they are beautiful; most Crossville porcelain tile collections include mosaic options to provide proper flooring solutions for wet areas (like shower floors) and anywhere slip resistance is of utmost priority.

Warming Color Palettes

We’re welcoming yet another year with warmer neutrals and color palettes. The heyday of gray has faded, and while this beloved, cool hue remains a staple, warm creams, beiges, and nuanced browns are gaining momentum, Pairing your existing grays with these warm, earthy tones is a great way to transition into the emerging color palette of 2019 and beyond.

Black and White

Black and white is always a classic combo for interiors, but black and white tile patterns are making a big comeback, especially for bathrooms.
