Art Deco is a timeless design style characterized by sharp-edged looks, rich colors, distinctive geometric details, and, often, expensive materials. Also called style moderne, the Art Deco movement in decorative arts, architecture, and design originated in France just before World War I and developed into a major style in Europe and the United States during the 1920s. Art Deco was not just a single style but a mixture of various (and often even contradictory) styles that represented luxury, glamour, modernity, and exuberance. Art Deco signaled a move away from the traditional, and this new and exciting style permeated just about anything that could be touched by design including fashion, buildings, interiors, crafts, fine arts, jewelry, cars, and even mundane items like household appliances.
Art Deco Revival
The last few years has seen a resurgence in the Art Deco movement as designers and artists return to geometric patterns, clean lines, and rich, earthen colors. Designers are looking for details beyond the basics, as artistic touches such as inlays and embellishments gain momentum. The trend toward using luxe materials—due to increasing consumer confidence—has many designers turning to 1920s elegance for inspiration. Today’s take on Art Deco is organic and graphic and comprised of luxurious materials from all over the world. Refinement is the focus rather than ostentatiousness.
