Guest Suite Bathroom

Introduction

Just mentioning Napa Valley evokes thoughts of lush vineyards and rolling hills. With this scenery as a backdrop, interior designer Kerrie Kelly, principal and owner of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab, embarked on a unique challenge to transform a guest cottage suite for the Peju family of the recently launched Liana Estates wine brand —located in the heart of enchanting Napa Valley.

The  Story

Selected as a Traditional Home showhouse, the Peju home was to be dramatically renovated within a very tight timeframe. In the cottage guest suite, Kelly had to envision a major transformation for both a master bedroom area and the adjoining bathroom. Drawing on her roots in sophisticated, masculine concepts, Kelly along with her team selected a warm color palette, metallic accents, and vintage accessories for the bedroom. They also opted for plush seating to round out the old-world elegance of the space. This design approach focused on balance, with the goal of creating a restful retreat with elements of grand style that would flow beautifully into the bath area that would also be entirely revolutionized.

“Because of the timeline, the layout (for the bathroom design) was key,” explains Kelly. In terms of the overall bath design, she states “high-contrast and dimensional tile was needed to highlight the bathroom space in a dramatic, yet classic way.”

Permitting issues with the home further crunched the already compressed timing. Kelly recalls, “When we got the green light, we were off to the races to create a French-inspired, marble oasis.”

To create a timeless aesthetic the echoed art deco and French-inspired trends, Kelly and her team specified Crossville’s Yin+Yang natural stone collection throughout the bath area. For the floor, they selected Yin+Yang in the Black Dragon and Snow Flower colorways. The Black Dragon in 1/2”x1/2” mosaics and Snow Flower in 12”x12 field tiles were installed in a clean-lined, bold—yet elegant—pattern that made the most of the black-and-white contrast. On walls, they continued the Snow Flower in 3” x 12” subway-like tiles enhanced with a black liner, creating focal points and counterpoints. In every detail, Kelly and her team successfully combined art deco and French inspiration, with tile as the foundation of the beautiful space.

Kelly attributes the team’s ability to “add depth while staying grounded at the same time” to their tile selections.

Thinking back on the showhouse challenge, Kelly recalls “Crossville became an extension of our interior design business. When it came to the unique aesthetic we wanted to create, our design friends at Crossville were eager to assist us in creating our ideal vision.”
