Introduction

If you are searching for a luxury stay along Florida’s white-sand beaches and a top-rate spa, look no further than Marriott’s Tideline Ocean Resort & Spa, located in Palm Beach, Florida. With an ideal location to soak up the Florida sun by the soft, calming ocean breeze, the Tideline offers an exclusive setting that will leave visitors wanting to return. As a full-service beachfront hotel, Tideline has been honored as one of Florida’s top resorts with numerous Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.

In the hospitality market, it is essential that facilities be modernized to heighten guest appeal. With guests expecting modern and updated amenities, hotel designers are challenged to specify products that withstand high traffic and are easy to maintain yet also exude style and fashion. Initially, the owners proposed an update to furniture, fixtures, and equipment for the renovation with no changes to the existing floor tile. The original flooring throughout the 134 guest rooms was beautiful but dated. Presented with the option to tile over the existing tile with  Crossville® Porcelain Tile Panels by Laminam®, the ownership and design team quickly approved this innovative floor surfacing option for the property renovation.

Thanks to tile-over-tile installation, the demolition time and mess would be eliminated. The installation would be quick and efficient, minimizing property shutdown times and guest disruption.

The  Story

With this upscale oceanfront property, the guestrooms were challenging for the designers to create a natural travertine look that maintained high slip resistance. Because the porcelain tile panels can easily be cut to any size, the team selected a custom-cut size to maximize yield, while maintaining the natural and soft travertine look of the floors. Opting for a bush-hammered porcelain tile panel finish, the surfacing provides a premium floor surfacing material. The tile over tile porcelain panels extended throughout the rest of the guest rooms—even into the bath areas, creating a high-end ideal flooring solution.

Guest Room Floors

The team specified Crossville’s I Naturali porcelain panels in the Travertino Grigio colorway for the guest room floors. The porcelain panels offer a profile of only 5.6 mm or ¼” in thickness, which allows for minimal transition issues within the existing space. The floors were quickly and easily installed without jeopardizing the high-quality design intended for the application.

The installation process included covering the existing tile with primer and then leveling any spaces or cracks with thinset. A layer of thinset was applied to the back of each porcelain tile panel that would be adhered to the primed existing tile. Leveling clips were placed and then two days for the thinset to dry. On the third day, the porcelain tile panels were grouted.

To ensure that the mix of flooring material would not pose a tripping hazard at transition zones, the team paid careful attention to the material heights. The baseboards were removed, and new thresh holds were added at the entry with no other transition concerns. New case goods and new closet doors were included as part of the existing renovation plan.

Guest Room Bathrooms

Crossville’s creative solutions proved to be the surfacing of choice not only for the guest rooms but also the guest baths and the exterior guest balconies because the flooring options answered aesthetic and performance challenges common in the hospitality sector.

For the guest room baths, the team chose Crossville’s State of Grace™• porcelain tile for the showers. From the gentle stone veining of grays to the delicate, subtle touches of black and brown tones, State of Grace is a durable porcelain tile alternative to true marble that offers easy maintenance and eliminates worries of staining and chipping that are common when using natural stone. With timeless style and traditional form, the renovated showers will be a welcome and warm respite for guests.

Guest Room Balconies

Choosing another premium material for the guest balconies, the team specified Crossville’s Owen Stone™ porcelain tile collection in an exterior finish. Featuring a leathered finish, achieved by running diamond-tipped brushes across the fired tile, the Owen Stone tile collection provides a surprisingly soft feel with tremendous visual richness yet no compromise of DCOF and technical performance standards for commercial-grade porcelain surfacing. The light hue of the Down colorway provides a beautiful selection to balance with the oceanfront views

Conclusion

Beyond the advantages of the tile-over-tile installation and the appeal of the tile’s clean, contemporary style, the Crossville surfacing options offer the building owner even more positives. From providing exceptional strength and performance to ease of maintenance, these essential characteristics for flooring will last and look great doing so in such a busy, high-traffic environment.
