Introduction

As the fourth largest travel center network in the U.S., Road Ranger LLC continues its expansion through Texas and the Midwest. Established in 1984, Road Ranger has locations stretching across seven states providing professional drivers and the everyday motorist with 24-hour access to safe, clean, and reliable facilities. With operations throughout one of the country’s most traveled cargo corridors, the company remains committed to a superior customer experience by offering clean amenities, national fast-food restaurants, Amazon Hub options, lottery, wi-fi, and much more.

Opening its 43rd location in Cisco, Texas, the $8 million dollar travel center features a convenience store, a Wendy’s restaurant, a sandwich shop, and three proprietary-branded food services in addition to pumps for passenger car refueling and semi-truck refueling. It also has more than 80 spaces for semi-truck parking. With this new location, the company embarked on creating an updated and more sophisticated customer experience with a re-design of the typical store specifications.

The  Story

Starting with the selection of flooring materials for the store’s main areas, the design team specified Crossville’s Portugal porcelain tile collection in the Harvest Tawny color. With the look of limestone, this unique collection features a subtle, organic surface that delivers a sophisticated, tactile elegance. The appearance proved to be ideal for accomplishing the modern and sophisticated look envisioned for the store. To add interest to the installation, the design team opted for 24” x 48” field tiles in a traditional stagger step throughout the expansive main areas.

To help define the beverage areas, the design team wanted a timeless clean visual and chose Crossville’s Color by Numbers collection in the Tea for Two gloss. With the white shade, the 4” x 12” tile shines beautifully on the walls allowing customers to easily identify signage.

With customers’ line of sight to the kitchen areas, the design team chose Crossville’s Cross-Colors Mingles in the Graphite hue that beautifully transitioned the public space to the back-of-house areas. Designed specifically to address high-traffic commercial areas that require increased slip resistance as well as ease of maintenance, the team chose Crossville’s Cross-Tread® texture for the kitchen and food prep areas. The textures are an integral part of the tile and cannot easily be worn down, and the unique design keeps the foot elevated so that it does not come into contact with grease and other contaminants that may be found on the floor to help prevent slipping. The Cross-Tread® surface pattern is eye-catching, making it a great option for wet and greasy areas or in transitional spaces.

Transitioning from the retail space, the team chose a unique yet complimentary blend of Crossville collections for the restroom floors, showers, and walls. Installing Crossville’s Moonstruck on the walls in the men’s and women’s restrooms adds a beautiful sandstone texture and directional veining. For the men’s restrooms, the team chose the Juno colorway in 12” x 24” semi-polished installed horizontally in a stagger step pattern, and for the women’s restroom, the designers opted for the Luna hue again in the 12” x 24” semi-polished installed horizontally. Adding a distinctive modern edge to the space, the team chose Crossville’s Color Blox 2.0 in the I See The Moon hue for the shower ceilings in the 6” x 6” option which contrasts the light tones of the Moonstruck collection on the walls to an almost black shade for the ceiling and floors.

Conclusion

With 26,000 cars passing through Cisco on I-20 daily, this Road Ranger location invites customers to slow down, relax, and stay a while. The incorporation of thoughtful design and premium tile (more than 19,048 square feet of Crossville collections) will see this travel center through high traffic demands and offer premium performance expected from customers at Road Rangers throughout the Midwest.
