Orderliness & Precision in Design
Native Metal porcelain and resin wall tile in Copper Deposit
Hexagonal shapes slot together perfectly with uniformity and precision, appealing to the eye and our innate desire for symmetry. We are hardwired to organize chaos into order, which means the symmetry and balance of hex shapes satisfy those desires that we may not even be consciously aware of.
The Hexagon in Nature
We often hear the hex referred to as “Nature’s most perfect shape.” Look closely, and you will find hexagons in nature over and over again. The honeycomb is perhaps one of the most obvious, but snowflakes, soap bubble rafts, turtle shells , and more all contain hexagonal shapes. Why are hexagons so prevalent in nature? It all boils down to efficiency. For example, the cells of a beehive honeycomb are hexagonal because the shape makes efficient use of space and building materials. Without taking a deep dive into mathematics, bees’ honeycombs made of interlocking hexagons will hold the most amount of honey while using the least amount of wax. Likewise, hexagons are an excellent surfacing solution because they cover the area better than any other shape!
Hex Tile Style & Retro Appeal
Multiplier porcelain tile hex mosaic in Dark Gray.
Hex shapes in tile design aren’t new; in the early 1900s, one-inch hex tiles were the go-to flooring choice for many bathrooms across America. The hex tiles could be all white, or surfaces could be tiled with complex patterns incorporating different colors. People with vintage homes often want a look that is in keeping with the home’s age. The classic one-inch hex tiles will do just that. But as with many classics, it’s modern twists on the old classic – such as larger formats, creative applications, and limitless colors and patterns that keep things fresh and current.
