Crossville Partners With MindClick; All Products Receive Leader Rating

As the world celebrates Earth Day on April 22, we wanted to explore how the environmental protection movement now incorporates a lot more than just recycling numbers and basic eco-conscious standards. So, what does “Going Green” really mean? Environmental practices are now becoming much more difficult to explain, and the quest for sustainability is much more sophisticated and nuanced.
April 21, 2022

From manufactures to designers and installers to end-users, it’s now important to think through the entire value chain of a product: intended use to end-of-life. For most products, think of three stages: 1. products that have significant impact associated with the manufacturing and sourcing of all the raw materials 2. products where most of their footprint happens in the use phase; and 3. products with a huge end-of-life scenario. The challenge for any product manufacturer is to understand where that impact happens and then how can they address those impacts. For example, with tile: 1. we’re concerned with raw material sourcing; 2. we’re reviewing the manufacturing process, including the drying and the firing, which can be energy intensive; and 3. we need to understand durability and use, and tile has a great end-of-life story.

Environmental impact continues to be an important issue at Crossville. When we began 30 years ago as a tile manufacturer, we started our sustainability effort because we wanted to do the right thing for the environment. And then it has evolved into these things that designers and specifiers were asking us for, like recycling content. And then the market really started to evolve and ask more questions — we understood it’s one thing to not do harm, it’s another to do good. So not only what we are doing as a manufacturer evolves, but also what we are able to provide to the people tile has shifted.

As part of our commitment to providing the best resources and solutions for our design and installation clients, we continuously research and engage with the latest tools to access critical data needed to guide specification choices. Renowned for our corporate commitment to sustainability, Crossville chose to be among the early participants of MindClick’s program. All Crossville products are now included in the MindClick MSAP, with our various selections holding the rating of Leader in all categories.

MindClick began with a commitment to level the playing field, to simplify product selection for designers so they can more easily identify products that are best for their projects. MindClick evaluates the environmental health performance of manufacturers and their products through nine primary metrics through the MindClick Sustainability Assessment Program (MSAP). Furthermore, through MSAP, every vendor and product receives ‘good, better, best’ ratings of their social and environmental impact, helping designers specify products that complement their overall priorities.

Leader rating is the highest available from MindClick, earned for “exemplary use of environmentally and socially responsible practices throughout the life cycle of product lines, from material choice to end of life solutions.” Crossville performs particularly well in the following metrics: healthy interiors, carbon reduction and environmental impact of manufacturing, packaging reduction, operational impact (contribution to reducing our customers’ footprints), and end of use through our best-in-class take-back program.

“We applaud Crossville’s commitment to the health of people and the planet, and their leadership in creating innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions. We’re pleased to feature Crossville in Design for Health and offer designers a quick and easy way to understand and share the ways Crossville’s products support their client’s ESG goals,” said JoAnna Abrams, MindClick CEO.

Additionally, we are excited to be featured in Design for Health. Powered by MindClick’s ratings, Design for Health is the designer community’s gateway to better interiors for people and planet, providing product ratings, analytics, and decision tools to support ESG goals – from net zero carbon emissions and healthy interiors to waste reduction, circularity, and DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion).

As part of our ongoing sustainability efforts and devotion to healthier environments, Crossville continues to provide innovative resources that work hand-in-hand with the architecture and design communities. As part of Design for Health, we have a powerful way to provide designers with an easy-to-understand environmental health rating for our products. If there’s a sustainable, health-focused commercial project being designed, we want every opportunity to make the specification. Our involvement with MindClick certainly supports this all-important goal.
