Once upon a time in the world of design, a standard size format for porcelain floor tiles was 12” x 12” (and that seemed fairly substantial from where the industry began). When specifiers thought “field tile,” they envisioned basic squares and created installation patterns accordingly. To add interest to tile flooring, designers often relied on use of mixes of colors and texture to create custom looks. As advancements in manufacturing technology took hold, we became able to produce larger and larger format floor tile sizes and offer more shape options, as well. Today’s “XXL” tile sizes are a far cry from the 12” x 12” field tiles that once seemed generously proportioned.
