Swatches Mood Board Giveaway Draws Creative Entries

August 24, 2020

Interior design mood boards are very popular ways of sharing inspiration, envisioning themes, and jumpstarting projects. Our latest wall tile collection, Swatches, is a colorful and versatile line that just begs to be incorporated into a mood board. In fact, we created a range of Swatches mood boards to show and share just some of the possibilities with this versatile line. The vibrant mood boards were so popular on social media that they sparked an idea: Why not host a Swatches mood board giveaway?

We invited designers to submit their specially designed mood board (or boards) inspired by and including Swatches by Crossville images (room scenes and/or tile swatch photos) for a chance to win one of three colorful watches. All of the mood board entries were fabulous (the three winners were chosen from a random drawing) — we loved seeing the unique creations and reading about the inspiration behind them! Here’s a look at the mood boards and each designer’s inspiration as well as how they envision specifying Swatches wall tile in the future.

Lindsay Paylor with  Garden State Tile was inspired by her vintage Swatch watch collection for her mood boards. “The Crossville Swatches collection coordinates perfectly with the bright 1980’s watches!” wrote Lindsay. She envisions specifying this line “for people who want to step outside the box and aren’t afraid of color!”

Lisa Chapman of Ideation Design Group  was inspired by the sea and “creating an ombre effect as seen in the creatures and waves of the ocean.” Lisa envisions specifying Swatches as an “accent wall on an oceanfront project —like a spa or creative office space.”

A “starry night sky” and a “warm and breezy laid-back Southern California beach” were the inspirations for Luis Padilla’s (with  Longust Distributing) mood boards. Luis wrote, “Swatches can be used on various walls and backsplashes, in both kitchen and restrooms.”

Noel Johnson of Coles Fine Flooring  was inspired by Morocco, “warm and spicy, full of vibrant colors and textures of a faraway land.” Noel envisions the Moods of Morocco board elements in a spa-like master bath, integrating orange gloss, flowing fabrics, burnished hardware, and sisal rugs —”the perfect oasis for a weary Bedouin.”

Noel’s second mood board takes its inspiration from Pantone’s Color of the Year, Classic Blue. She added tranquil and comforting materials to the blue hues to “hug our home” and “soften our ‘blue’ life.” Noel envisions these elements in an open kitchen area, “encompassing your family like a hug.”

Jenny Eichholz was inspired by “Travels to South America and nature inspired colors that go beyond neutral colors.” Jenny envisioned specifying Swatches wall tiles in outdoor environments.

Barbara Preston, kitchen and bath designer with  Coles Fine Flooring, wowed us with not one but TEN fabulous mood boards, each one with unique inspirations and themes.

The board on the left was inspired by a dear friend of Barbara’s who was recently diagnosed with cancer. This is Barbara’s “what are you waiting for!! Yes, pick the red and pink” mood board. She envisions the vibrant red and pink in the bar area of a home.

Interior designer Daryl Carter inspired the board on the right. Barbara said that Daryl uses neutral colors like cream and black and then layers on texture and subtle pattern. She thinks Swatches wall tiles are perfect for backsplashes in kitchens with neutral “bones,” such as cabinets and counters.

The  exotic fabric inspired the board on the left. Because it is both bright and muted, Barbara elected to use Crossville tile with the same characteristics. She sees using this tile behind a vanity, “the entire wall with vibrant colors and then toned down just a bit with large mirrors and sconces.

As for the board on the right, “Southern California is all the inspiration any designer needs,” wrote Barbara. She also penned an ode to Swatches!

Swatches Swatches everywhere
Swatches above my new Jenn Air
Swatches surrounding my glass vent hood
makes the kitchen mood so good

Swatches behind the bar with lights
sets the mood for fery night
And as the lights get turned down low
my Swatches tile have a subtle glow.

A man’s suit is the inspiration behind the left mood board. “A traditional man’s suit is sexy,” writes Barbara. “Add a bright pocket scarf and playful argyle socks, and a sexy man just got more interesting.”

“Tiles are fashion,” she continues. “Use the fabrics for traditional and the black Swatch tile to riff on a pin stripe suit. Throw in Crossville Argent subtly bright tiles and then a bit of a pop with the Colors by Numbers. And wow!!” As far as specifying the tiles, Barabra sees herself “going crazy with Swatches wall tiles in the shower and the tub surround!”

“Sometimes inspiration comes from the simplest things.” The board on the right is inspired by a hot night cooking dinner and a Caliente. “Red peppers and red hot tile — a perfectly hot pair!” Barbara thinks these tiles would be amazing in a bar area.

Pink tiles from the 50s that are still in many Southern California homes today remind Barbara of etched glass and pretty doilies. The mood board on the left “takes that and turns it a bit jazzier. Using a mulberry pink and pairing it with black creates a look too hot for Grandma!” Barbara envisions these tiles in a commercial bar environment.

The mood board on the left takes inspiration from the iconic Rat Pack. “…winter nights around the pool in Palm Springs. Full glass doors opening from the outside. The mid-century modern kitchen hosts warm woods and a creamy subway tile backsplash.” Barbara feels that backsplashes are a perfect spot for Swatches wall tile.

The board below takes inspiration from a mother-son trip from Tuscon, Arizona to San Diego. “Beautiful sand dunes lined one strip of highway. We impulsively parked and shot photos. My son wrapped a scarf around his head ,and the mood felt instantly transported to another land. I wanted to recreate that feeling through tile and counters and fabric.” Barabara says, “Swatches is perfect for the walls behind vanities to create a mood.”

Barbara’s last board is inspired by Sweden, “their flag colors, of course, being yellow and blue coupled with the light furniture and clean lines.” She envisions the blue and yellow subway tiles in a kitchen backsplash.
