Crossville Offers a Macro Study of Design Trends: Design for Individualism

July 17, 2019

Design is currently evolutionary—not revolutionary.

Design today is moving forward. However, the movement is more evolutionary than revolutionary. The current trends are adaptive amalgams of many influences, including shifts in culture, perspectives, technology, and our connections to nature and times gone by.

Crossville’s VP of Marketing Lindsey Waldrep recently offered a look at design macro trends at the Coverings Expo in Orlando. Here’s her take on what’s happening in design.

“The major trends that are happening are kind of shifting and warping, because in my experience you guys will often find… the infamous M. The millennials are buying those homes, they’re having their children, and their influence is strong. But it’s not drastic. Because…they honestly have a lot of their parents’ core values. And you’re sure to see that in the spaces that they buy and the they’re decorating. We all love our phones, we love our tech, who’s not constantly in it? But there’s a contrast in humanity now, for this desire for a human element—for touch and for nature. So you’re seeing some shifts back and forth. And then nostalgia is every bit as important as innovation. And what’s interesting is to what level nostalgia depending on what generation you are in.”

At the heart of the current design trends, we’re seeing a rise in individualism. Designers and consumers alike are seeking opportunities for self-expression, to bring unique stories to the way we create, work, and live in our places and spaces. Just as we can be products of our environments, our environments are becoming products of us—of our priorities, our purposes, and our inspirations.

Trend 1: Soft Modern

In this era of equality and inclusion, Soft Modern offers strength and femininity. Think bold lines and durable materials coupled with muted hues and calming aesthetics.

Trend 2: Neo-Traditional

Traditional spaces are getting new life as longstanding styles integrate and morph to meet modern sensibilities. This is about surprising new twists for time-honored looks.

Trend 3: Urban Nature

Natural influence is increasingly important in design as a balance to the tech and excess of contemporary society. Through Urban Nature, we can achieve escapism and minimalism.

Trend 4: Abstract Pop

A little bit mid-century and a lot of the 1980s, this colorful and geometric trend adds spark and pop to interiors. Think primary colors juxtaposed with black and white in eye-catching decor.
