What does “Comfortably Content” mean in the context of interior design trends? You’ve probably heard of the Danish word hygge by now – it’s a Scandinavian concept of living cosily. Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”) is a way of living that embodies warmth, friendliness, and community. Hygge celebrates the simple pleasures in life such as cozy fireplaces, warm blankets and drinks, candlelight, and spending time with friends. Comfortably Content can be thought of as the next generation of “Scandi Modern,” or hygge.
Why Are We Seeing Comfortably Content in Interior Design?
As the millennials are starting to buy their first homes and begin their families, the ideas of well-being, community, and family are huge priorities for them. Staying in is the new going out, and group activities like cooking and board games are their preferred ways to “party.” For millennials, coziness is a very big deal! And when it comes to interior design, handmade, authentic, and organic items reign supreme.
What Does Comfortably Content Look Like in Interior Design?
As a counterpoint to the Art Deco revival trend, and as an earthier extension of the Maker’s Movement, Comfortably Content design elements include less formal materials such as plaster, concrete, soapstone, and highly textural fabrics like linen and cotton. Weathered metals and matte finishes abound, and in contrast to the dark woods of the Flemish trends, you’ll see light colored and white-washed woods. You’ll also see many handmade items, raw edges of wood, cosy afghans, oversize cable-knits, throw pillows, and a lot of candlelight.
Where to See Comfortably Content in Tile
If you love the looks associated with Scandi Modern and the concept of hygge, there are plenty of tile designs that will fit right in with your Comfortably Content decorative schemes! Light and whitewashed wood looks, bold wall textures, fabric looks, informal stone and concrete looks, weathered metal looks, handmade looks, and matte tiles are all a part of Crossville’s line-up of right on-trend tile styles. Here’s a look at some of them.
The porcelain tiles in our Reclamation collection are a blend of light-washed wood and concrete looks that echo the comeback spirit of reclaimed materials and revitalized cities. Each of the four colorways, Cotton Exchange, Tobacco Road, Steel City, and Whiskey Lullaby, could be the perfect complement to your cozy design.
Looking for fabric-like texture for your Comfortably Content design project? We’ve got you covered with two textile-inspired collections. Patterned with classic warp and weft texture and tone, Ready to Wear comes in a full line of smart-casual shades that speak to a relaxed-yet-refined sensibility. And our latest line of fabric-finish tile, Bohemia, offers a fresh-take on texture in boho-chic style in eight earthen colorways.
Unlike the shiny metals you’re likely to see in Art Deco revival schemes, aged and weathered metals are what you’ll find in Comfortably Content spaces. Our Altered State porcelain tile collection is available in five colorways that artfully mimic the beauty of oxidized and aged steel, copper, iron zinc, and chromium.
(Be sure to check out our Gauged Porcelain Tile Panels in Oxide and I Metalli for even more aged and weathered metal looks.)
Bold wall texture can easily be yours with our Simpatico collection that offers a selection of dimensional tiles to add texture, shape, and shadow to walls.
This is just a sampling of the many tile collections available that will beautifully complement your Comfortably Content spaces. Check out our artisan-inspired Savoy and Handwritten collections as well as wood look Nest, concrete like Notorious, and fabulously organic Java Joint for more Comfortably Content inspiration!
