San Carlos, California family tired of living with a dated, dark, and gloomy kitchen knew it was time for a change. But with two teenage boys who would soon be going off to college, the couple did not want to embark upon a full-fledged gut and renovation; instead, they opted for a refresh, keeping their appliances and the layout intact with only minor structural changes. By updating the color scheme, replacing some of the surfaces (including a new floor by Crossville!), and adding new recessed lighting and fixtures, interior designer Sabrina Alfin was able to give this family a bright, new kitchen for about a third of the cost of a complete re-do!

The previous kitchen’s wood-toned cabinetry darkened the kitchen and made the space seem smaller. Rather than replace the cabinetry, the homeowners chose to resurface the existing cabinets with new custom Shaker doors and drawer fronts, painted in a sophisticated two-tone teal and white palette.

Alfin also guided this dog-loving family to select durable porcelain tile flooring in a weathered barnwood look. Crossville’s SpeakEasy in the Sidecar color option perfectly fit the bill. The gray undertones of the tile perfectly complement the grayish-teal cabinet color, and the overall lighter appearance really helps to open up the space. Most importantly, the family gets the classic look of wood in durable porcelain tile that will stand up to even the messiest paws.

New recessed lighting and gorgeous vintage-style glass pendants also help to brighten the space.

Spicy accent colors warm up the teal and white scheme and pair beautifully with the weathered wood-look floors.
